AUTHOR CARBON MTB 26“

Following the first generation of carbon frames for mountain bikes, we were introducing a new hard tail MTB frame for 2010, so-called second-generation frame. The new frame combines to a considerable degree already tried and tested features from the first generation frame, as well as the best of the current carbon cross bike frame. For MY 2011 we stay with this frame for MAGNUM, INTROVERT, MASTER, REVOLT, MODUS.

The shaping of the frame tubes follows the proven MTB frame profiling – biaxially twisted frame tubes (BTP), straight chain stays (3S Chain Stay), S-shaped seat stays (VAD) and the seat tube 34.9 mm. All the above is supported for greater comfort by a biaxially twisted top frame tube (used in our cross-country carbon frame for 2009), that provides maximum comfort as well as good acceleration.

The frame is made using the AUTHOR MONOCOQUE CARBON TECHNOLOGY, nevertheless, for 2010 we are introducing numerous new production and software technologies employed in manufacture of this frame for models MAGNUM and INTROVERT. These technologies include:

  1. HTR – High Toughness Resin
  2. EPS – Ethyl Poly Styrene
  3. TPM – Thermo Plastic Mesh
  4. FEA – Finite Element Analysis

Author Karbon MTB 26In general, our main aim was to decrease the frame weight. We achieved a weight decrease by 250 g compared to 2009, now the 19” HTR frame weighs mere 1100 g. Technologies EPS and TPM contributed to decreased stresses in inner frame layers.

Technological and mechanical properties of the new frame include above all, its exceptional absorbing of vibrations and impacts. This primary feature of the new carbon material, supported by the shape of the seat stay VAD (Vibration Absorption Design), multiplies the dampening quality to the extreme, rightfully earning the label COMFORT STAY. Another benefit of carbon is the higher rigidity, strength and lower material fatigue compared to duralumin.

Further increase in rigidity and strength of the frame is secured by the head tube compatible with 1.5” taper fork steerer tube and the Bottom Bracket shell compatible with dimension BB30.

Advantages of the fork's steerer tube taper 1.5”:

  1. more evenly distributed bending stress in the taper fork
  2. lower fork steerer tube weight (by 20 to 30 g) compared to straight 1.5”, or 1 1/8” steerer tube
  3. optimum (greater) diameter of the fork steerer tube at the point of steering tube insertion (i.e. at the level of the top fork crown), where the bending stress is greatest when braking.
  4. finaly also better design (crown bigger, fits better to big head tube at frame)
  5. just again stiffer joint of head tube and fork steerer tube

Benefits of BB30 bottom bracket shell:

  1. Decreased weight of crank set by 20 to 80 g
  2. Use of bigger bearings pressed directly into the BB shell
  3. Bigger bearings can withstand greater stresses and provide longer service life
  4. Location of bearings inside the frame protects them from soiling better in
  5. comparison with externally mounted bearings (unit BB, Mega Exo, GXP)
  6. 5. Possibility for greater curvature of cranks provides more room for the rider’s ankles.

Models AUTHOR 2011 will be fitted in all cases with the best fitting and mutually compatible head set and fork steerer tube. Nonetheless, the frame sets for After Market sale will be fitted with head sets for extended head tube taper 1.5”, as well as a reduction for traditional head tube 1 1/8” (28.6 mm). Equally, the BB shell in the frame is compatible with the size BB30, but frame sets will be available with a reduction for traditional thread. The BB shell width will be 68 mm.

New is also applying the alloy stickers on the chain stay and down tube to protect the frame tubes from chain's falling of the chainwheels.

We have developed a new racing geometry for this new frame. We have reflected our own experiences as well as comments and suggestions from race riders of our sponsored MTB teams (Alpine Pro AUTHOR TEAM and AUTHOR MASTERS), more on page 17. The frame will be offered once again in four sizes, yet this time in regular frame size intervals and the extension of the range that will be able to cater for greater range of population: sizes 16.0; 17.5; 19 and 20.5” will replace the existing sizes 16.5; 17.5; 19.0 and 20”.

Full 22 days of production of each frame, several levels of parameter QC checking during production and extensive laboratory load tests provide absolute quality guarantee for all carbon frames AUTHOR.
